Students of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) yesterday went on rampage to protest the killing of Oluwafemi Timileyin Shonibare, a 400- level microbiology student by suspected ritualists on June 26.
The protesting students virtually shut down Osogbo, the state capital as they prevented vehicular movement on major roads for about five hours.
They later marched to the state government secretariat, Abere to seek audience with Governor Rauf Aregbesola but were prevented from entering as security men hurriedly shut the gates.
The protesting students, who were dressed in black attire to match their mourning mood made bonfires at strategic positions and barricaded the roads.
Consequently, traders, offices and commercial banks had to close down for several hours until policemen brought the situation under control.
The state police command had on Tuesday paraded three suspects in connection with the killing. They are: Sakariyahu Abdulrafiu, a 19-year herbalist apprentice, Ayuba Ibrahim, 24 and Yusuff Kareem, 18.
Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olufimihan Adeoye, while parading the suspects, said they perpetrated the crime on June 26 about 7:30pm at the Oke-Bale area of Osogbo.
He said the suspects conspired and killed one Timilehin Shonibare, a 400- level Microbiology student of the university by hitting him with a pestle on the head.
“After killing him, they cut off his head and his two palms and dumped his remains in the bush.
“The deceased’s friends reported the case of a missing person to the police on June 27 at 7:45pm. The information and support they provided led to the arrest of the suspects,” Adeoye added.
He explained that investigation by the police led to the arrest of the suspects when the police went on their trail but one of the suspects was still at large.
Adeoye further disclosed that the victim’s head and wrists, which were roasted in a black clay pot, were recovered from Abdulrafiu when he was arrested and that his confessional statement led to the arrest of his accomplices.
He said the remains of the victim had been recovered, removed and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, adding that the suspects were being investigated and would be prosecuted accordingly.
Meanwhile, Governor Aregbesola has decried the killing of Shonibare, describing the perpetrators as heartless and ungodly.
A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alani Baderinwa, further quoted Aregbesola as saying the incident was wicked and inhuman.
“The state government in its determination to bring the killers to justice, will collaborate with the security agents to ensure that the offenders are adequately punished.
“Government appeals to the students to be calm and peaceful while they mourn their colleague and allow the killers to be brought to justice,” the statement said.
