Tiger Woods' world ranking just hit a depressing new low

It’s hard to believe that, just three years ago, Tiger Woods sat at the very top of the Official World Golf Ranking. Questions like, ‘Would he break Jack Nicklaus’ major record?’ were suddenly back on the table. At one point, it even looked likely.

He’s been free-falling down the rankings ever since.

His on-course fall looks so severe because of his injuries. Without getting bogged down in excessive details: Golf’s world rankings work on a two-year rolling basis, with the points you accumulate in a given event being replaced by the ones you gained at the same event two years later.

A slate of various injuries sidelined Tiger’s career since, meaning that for two years, Tiger was basically replacing events that he either won or played well in with 0 points. Those around him, meanwhile, were gradually improving their year-over-year performance, making Tiger’s free-fall down the rankings look even more severe.

The result? For the first time since turning professional, Tiger Woods’ ranking just hit a new low. On Monday, he dropped out of the top 1000 in the World Rankings (he’s 1,005th).
