- A group, the Urhobo Peoples Integrity Group (UPIO), says Igbos cannot compel other groups to join the Biafra struggle without their consent
- The UPIO states that the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) is the socio - cultural organization that takes decision for Urhobo people
- The group prays for the good health of President Buhari, peace, unity and prosperity of Nigeria
The Urhobo Peoples Integrity Group (UPIO) has distanced Urhobo people from being part of Biafra map, describing it as an insult to conscript Urhobos in the Biafra struggle without their consent.
The group in a statement through its president, Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu, said Igbos had the right to pursue self determination, but noted that such right does not give them the justification to compel other groups to join the Biafra agitation without consultation, Vanguard reports.
The UPIO said the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) is the socio - cultural organization that takes decision for the Urhobo people after exhaustive consultation with traditional rulers and the people. “To conscript us into their agenda without our consent is the highest form of insult for our revered institution and people. We condemn and reject such insult. We pray for good health for President Buhari, peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria.” the group said.
Meanwhile, some Niger Delta groups have condemned the comments credited to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu on the past Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan.
The group Niger Delta Security Watch of Nigeria (NDSWN), Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, (IPDI), and Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (FHRAAC) said Kanu's remarks that Goodluck Jonathan was incompetent can undermine the relationship between the East and the Niger Delta. The groups led by Dickson Bekederemo, Austin Ozobo and Alaowei Cleric said while the agree with Kanu on some of his ideologies concerning the North and the unity of Nigeria, it is wrong for him to have spoken negatively about the former president.
